Buying a Used Truck in Sydney? The Most Common Issues We Find

If you’re buying a used truck in Sydney or anywhere in NSW, a professional pre-purchase inspection can identify hidden problems before they become expensive repairs. At Last Check Vehicle Inspection, we inspect a wide range of trucks, including prime movers, rigid trucks, tipper trucks, agitator trucks, bin trucks, crane trucks, and other heavy vehicles. One thing they all have in common is that even the best-presented trucks can have underlying mechanical issues.

Based on our experience, some of the most common issues we find during truck inspections include:

• Engine oil leaks.
• Gearbox oil leaks.
• Differential oil leaks.
• Hydraulic fluid leaks on trucks fitted with hydraulic equipment, such as tipper trucks, agitator trucks, bin trucks, crane trucks, and other hydraulic-operated bodies.
• PTO (Power Take-Off) faults, including oil leaks, engagement issues, excessive noise, vibration, or problems operating the hydraulic equipment.
• Water contamination in the air brake reservoirs, commonly caused by a faulty or poorly maintained air dryer.
• Turbocharger wear or boost-related issues.
• EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system faults.
• Emission system faults, including DPF-related issues.
• Cooling system leaks or low coolant levels.
• Worn suspension and steering components.
• Air leaks from the air brake or air suspension system.
• Oil residue around the turbocharger and intercooler pipework.
• ECU fault codes and electronic system faults that may not trigger a warning light on the dashboard.
• Worn driveline components, including universal joints and centre bearings.

Many of these faults cannot be identified during a simple walk-around inspection or a short test drive. In many cases, they only become apparent through experience, specialist diagnostic equipment, and a thorough mechanical assessment.

Never purchase a used truck without a professional pre-purchase inspection. Even a well-maintained truck that is more than three years old will usually have at least a few issues that require attention. Identifying these problems before you buy can help you negotiate the purchase price, budget for upcoming repairs, avoid unexpected breakdowns, and make an informed decision.

A professional truck inspection can often save you thousands of dollars. In some cases, it helps buyers avoid purchasing a truck with major hidden defects altogether. In other cases, if the truck is still worth buying, the inspection report can provide strong evidence of the faults found, allowing you to negotiate a significantly better purchase price. It is not uncommon for buyers to save many times the cost of the inspection through successful price negotiations. Our reports are supported by detailed photographs, diagnostic results, and objective evidence, giving you confidence that the findings are factual, well-documented, and difficult to dispute.

If you’re looking to buy a used truck in Sydney, a comprehensive pre-purchase inspection can provide valuable peace of mind before committing to one of your biggest investments.
