Here is a list of items we check on pre purchase trailer inspection.
If the trailer looks good and you get a positive report about the condition, there are some more tests to be done that require two or more people to assist.
Connect the trailer to a carrier and check the lights to ensure they are ok. Brake lights and reverse lights need to be inspected as well by two people, one person pushes the brake and put the gear in reverse and another person should check the trailer lights from outside.
Then a test ride which is a must needs to be done. If the trailer is a people carrier, sit inside the trailer and ask the driver to drive to ensure the ride is comfortable and you do not hear any weird sounds.
Then follow the trailer carrier with another car and ensure the trailer is going in one line and straight. This is the only way to ensure the chassis is 100% straight and will serve you well.
If the trailer is not a people mover, just follow the trailer briefly to ensure it goes in one line and that is enough.
These extra tests are only required if you get positive feedback from us and can be done on the settlement day itself. If the trailer is not a good choice or physical structural defects are found, you will be informed not to waste your time and look elsewhere.

Based on the trailer type, the inspector appointed to carry out the pre purchase inspection will be different.
All lightweight trailers get inspected by a fully qualified mechanic specialised in light trailers.
If you have a truck trailer, the inspection will be done by a fully qualified truck mechanic with expertise in truck trailer operation and repairs.
If you have a camper trailer, a different mechanic will be appointed with full knowledge of campervans, caravans and camper trailers so that you get advice from someone familiar with your trailer type.
Trailer inspection report forms are slightly different from our other vehicle inspection reports and are based on the type of trailer we have inspected.
At the same time, the report comes with lots of pictures of all parts of the trailer so that you can see every panel with your own eyes including all reported defects such as body rusts, dents, hydraulic leaks etc.
