WHAT IS ONBOARD FAULT DIAGNOSIS IN VEHICLES?

Onboard fault diagnosis or OBD2 Diagnosis is a technology used in all cars and most light trucks that can reveal the faults of the vehicle without the need for any parts disassembly. This helps mechanics determine what is wrong with the vehicle internally and narrows down their path to determine the cause of each problem.

OBD2 was introduced in 1996 however the early versions were only used to find the reason for the illuminated engine malfunction light that appears inside the instrument cluster. This is a warning light that tells the driver that the engine needs urgent attention.

As the technology evolves, more and more capabilities are being added to onboard diagnosis that enables car inspectors and mechanics to know more about every aspect of the car including Emissions, Engine Problems, Gearbox Issues, Electronic Faults, Cooling System, Internal Wear & Tear, Sensors, Airbags, ABS Brake, 4WD System, Hybrid Battery Replacement, Hybrid Inverter and much more.

The more advanced the vehicle is, the more advanced diagnostic tool is needed to enable us finding all the faults and fix the cause before it gets too late and incurs big repair costs.

IS ONBOARD DIAGNOSIS SIMILAR IN DIFFERENT CARS?

The answer is NO. Nowadays OBD2 scanners have evolved into real computers with immense functionalities and each car manufacturer has its own system which is still different among various models.

For example, Mercedes Benz has different software for each of its classes and diagnostic computers will find the application based on the global VIN Detection when connected to the car ECU port.

The diagnostic tool finds the VIN of the particular model and based on that scans the internal modules to ensure everything is covered. This means the application for a C class Mercedes will be different from an E class and the E class will be different from the S and M class.

The same thing applies to all global car manufacturers, and they all have different software for their different models, so it is very important to choose the right mechanic with the right equipment to get to the bottom of everything and leave nothing undetected.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN STANDARD & ADVANCED FAULT DIAGNOSIS?

The difference is Huge. Basic onboard fault diagnosis or standard OBD2 diagnosis has limited functionalities and does not detect the VIN. Therefore, it cannot scan all the internal modules of the car where an advanced fault diagnosis computer can do this with its exclusive capabilities.

With the Manufacturer's Original Fault Diagnosis Computer, you can gather countless additional data to go beyond fault diagnosis and prevent faults before they happen.

For instance, if we detect a camshaft problem which is a vital internal part of the engine and cannot be seen without disassembling the engine, we can determine if the timing belt or timing chain is faulty and needs urgent attention before it is too late and costs us a new engine.

There might still be other reasons why the camshaft is playing up and that need to be determined by the specialist mechanic after the inspection which needs hands-on work and permission to move or disassemble parts when necessary.

STANDARD ONBOARD FAULT DIAGNOSIS

Standard Onboard Fault Diagnosis uses a portion of scan tool capability called OBD2 Protocol and can only show selected fault codes in the car such as finding the reason for illuminated engine light, detecting bad oxygen sensors and standard things of this nature.

Standard OBD2 Fault Diagnosis normally gives you one or two pages of fault codes and cannot narrow down the potential causes of each fault like an advanced machine that is exclusive to each make and model.

It is, however, very important and is a necessity in all pre-purchase car inspections and not doing that means we do not know absolutely anything about the internal part of the car and makes the inspection a pure waste of time.

ADVANCED ORIGINAL ONBOARD FAULT DIAGNOSIS

Advanced Original Onboard Fault Diagnosis or Manufacturer Original Fault Diagnosis gives you dozens of pages of live stream and data specific to each make and model, including Engine Live Data (reveals the engine running status) and not only reveals many more fault codes, but it can also determine the overall health of the internal parts.

This means if something is misperforming or is about to fail we can detect it before it becomes a permanent fault. Advanced original onboard fault diagnosis can also find Hidden Faults that have not yet triggered the engine warning light since it commonly takes a while for some faults to come up.

This is not a prediction or guesswork of what will happen after the test and all the data gathered is purely based on the fact and the status of the vehicle at the time of diagnosis. It however maximises finding the number of potential faults by far and gives a true understanding of the vehicle's status before purchase.

SUPER ADVANCED ORIGINAL ONBOARD FAULT DIAGNOSIS

Super Advanced Original Onboard Fault Diagnosis Goes Beyond the Manufacturer’s Original Diagnosis. Apart from all the manufacturer’s specifics and on the side of Engine Live Data, it gives you the Engine Individual Component Test & Much More which can find even a faulty cylinder inside the engine block, comments on the health of the internal parts and how good the car has been treated in the past.

Imagine there are no engine warning lights and no current faults, but something is on the verge of collapse, this test can find it and warn the prospective buyer before it is too late.

Similarly, this test is just based purely on the fact and the powertrain status at the time of the test and cannot predict what will happen after the inspection.

This test however maximizes the number of potential faults detected at the time of inspection and Minimizes the Chance of Scamming in case some Fault Codes Have Been Deliberately Erased from the ECU (Vehicle’s Electric Control Unit) before sale which unfortunately still happens even by some registered car dealers.

ABOUT LAST CHECK’S ONBOARD COMPUTER FAULT DIAGNOSIS

At Last Check, we perform the most sophisticated computer fault diagnosis on all makes and models upon request. The more premium the inspection plan is, the more points we need to check, and the more people become involved in the process.

We are equipped with the most advanced and world-class diagnostic tools with separate applications for all different cars for your peace of mind. We can perform the Exact Same Fault Diagnosis the Manufacturer Does on the car using the same technologies so if you have for example a BMW, we can provide the same diagnostic that BMW itself does.

Our basic OBD2 fault diagnosis is done by ONE inspector and our Advanced Original Scans are done by TWO inspectors. One inspector physically scans the vehicle’s onboard computer and uploads the data into our servers and another inspector or Auto engineer at the base will go through tens of pages of data to find the slightest hidden faults inside the powertrain.

This is a time-consuming process and can take up to another 4 Hours after the inspection for the complete results to come up. Put it this way, finding even one faulty gear inside the gearbox or a faulty camshaft inside the engine can save hundreds or thousands of dollars in repair costs and minimise the risk before purchase.

This process can take up to another 6 Hours after inspection in some Supercars, Hypercars and Performance Cars such as Mercedes Benz AMG or BMW M (Motorsport) with powerful engines.
